THE BREATH OF THE TRULLI

30/07/2025

Five trulli dating back to the 18th century have been carefully restored to tell a new, contemporary story full of charm, while preserving their authentic soul

The transformation of rural buildings into holiday homes has become increasingly popular in Apulia since the early 2000s.

Such is the case with these five 18th-century trulli and their adjoining structures, nestled in the heart of the Itria Valley. Thanks to the sensitive renovation and interior design by architect Isabella Ciraci Altamura, they have been reimagined through a modern lens without compromising their essence.

The substantial renovation began by embracing the soul of the buildings themselves. Through a series of strategic interventions, the project set out to reveal and enhance their innate charm, bringing them to life once more, not by denying their history, but by celebrating it.

The entrance leads through the original trulli, where you find a sitting room with a traditional stone and lime fireplace, a cosy conversation nook, and an alcove that opens into a newly built extension. This addition features a spacious living area, dining room, kitchen, guest bathroom, and two bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, as well as a stone and lime staircase leading to another sleeping area. The upper floor also provides access to a large panoramic terrace.

Light plays a starring role in the interiors, brought in through newly created perspectives and openings that remain in perfect harmony with the original structure. One of the defining elements of the renovation is the deep respect for existing materials and traditional methods, such as the reuse of old stone and the integration of new local stone flooring, creating a space that is both simple and cohesive.
