An elegant apartment in a sixteenth-century aristocratic palazzo shows, through its renovation, a profound sensitivity to historical memory
“Situated within a sixteenth-century aristocratic palazzo in the heart of Naples, the apartment, measuring approximately 270 square metres, occupies the north-west wing of the building and spans the second and third floors,” begins architect Ornella Russo, who oversaw its renovation.

“The project is based on a process of subtraction and enhancement of the original layout: the removal of incongruous partitions allowed for a reinterpretation of a complex floor plan, dominated by the thickness of the historic walls, restoring continuity to the spaces,” the architect continues.
A unifying element throughout the redesign is the careful selection of materials: Salerno terracotta floors, handcrafted ceramics, white panelling, and original elements – doors, wooden beams and the antique terracotta floor on the third level – that have been restored and preserved.

Overall, the project preserves the classical rigour and elegance of the historic architecture, respecting the structural context in which the airy apartment is set. As architect Russo points out, “it reinterprets its memory through a language consistent with the requirements of contemporary living.”
