Along the shores of a lake, a contemporary residence stands in perfect balance with the surrounding nature and forest in which it has been built
We are in northern Poland, in a traditional village in the Kociewie region, by the shore of a lake. The house, completed in 2024, has a surface area of 175 square metres on an 8,000-square-metre plot. It was designed by the IFAgroup team.
The modest scale of the building has in no way altered the character and qualities of the site. The design goal was to create a form that would not stand out from its surroundings in terms of scale and proportions.
The dwelling is located on the site of an ancient lake and sits at water level, 2.5 metres below the road. This difference in elevation provided the essential design guidelines.
The building’s form creates two terraces: one facing west and the other east. The western terrace is sheltered and overlooks the forest, while the eastern one faces the lake, allowing the owners to fully enjoy the surrounding nature. Windows are positioned to frame specific views from within.
The building rests on 10-metre-long piles. The façade is made of reclaimed local timber boards sourced from an old barn. The colour palette of the interiors is strongly inspired by the surrounding nature: ranging from shades of grey to beige, warm browns, and the deep blue of the seating in the living area, complemented by small red accents.
