In the old heart of Salò, on the shores of Lake Garda, a residence finds new life through a subtle dialogue between memory, materials, and contemporary design
In the historic centre of Salò, overlooking one of the town’s most charming and important streets, this house seems to maintain a symbiotic relationship with its surrounding landscape. Four floors connected by an internal lift make up a residence where the lake is not merely something to look at, but a living dimension that permeates the rooms, inspires the materials, and accompanies everyday life.
The renovation project bears the signature of architect Sandro Scaramuzza, with whom MODO+ enjoys a long-standing and well-established collaboration. This synergy has once again succeeded in giving shape to a setting of authentic character, enriched with charm, depth, and new life.
Before the renovation, the property lacked any particular architectural distinction, a condition that prompted the team to identify and enhance its strengths despite strict landscape regulations. These constraints required keeping the original façade and window openings, which have now become an integral part of the design, strengthening the dialogue between the interiors and the private lakeside garden.
Water also plays a role in the design, though in an unexpected form. Landscape regulations prohibited the installation of a swimming pool, so the architect chose to evoke one through the history of the location. According to local folklore, water once flowed down from the mountain right along that very street, running through homes and being used for washing and processing flax before draining into the lake.
