Architecture, wellbeing and sustainability coexist in perfect balance at the boutique hotel Saltus, in a deep and instinctive bond with nature and its healing power

Suspended at an altitude of 1,100 metres on the Salto plateau above Bolzano, there is a place where the landscape sets the rhythm and architecture yields to the breath of the forest. Opened in 2019, Saltus presents itself as a boutique hotel born from the idea of creating a space for regeneration, where nature is not a backdrop but the very heart of the experience.
Designed by Studio Tara Architekten, the building is composed of three volumes clad in locally sourced, pre-aged larch, following the line of the forest and opening up to the sky through expansive glazing. Walnut wood, lime plaster, and red porphyry define essential interiors, where morning light and natural tones invite a slower way of living.
The philosophy of Saltus takes its name from biophilia: the deep connection between human beings and nature. Every choice is conceived to nurture that relationship.

The Forest Spa is the natural extension of this vision: a meditative journey through the light and scents of the forest leads to panoramic saunas, relaxation rooms and a yoga space, dissolving the boundary between indoors and outdoors.
Dining follows the same farm-to-table philosophy: local and seasonal ingredients are transformed with simplicity into dishes that tell the story of the land. For Saltus, sustainability is not merely a definition but a daily practice.
Finally, art: Saltus Sinafisi, an artist-in-residence programme, invites creatives to engage in dialogue with the landscape and local traditions, transforming hospitality into a space for creative exchange.
The result is a place that does not simply host, but proposes a new way of inhabiting time: slow, mindful, and in tune with the forest that surrounds it.
