A CHALLENGE AND A LOT OF PASSION

12/10/2022

An old stable has been completely renovated to enjoy contact with nature, adapting it to the noble game of polo.

Buying an old stable and giving it new life was the challenge that Mrs Kinga accepted when in 2017 she decided to carry out a general renovation, starting from the foundations.

We are in Poland, about 50 km from Warsaw, near Warka, a town known for the production of excellent beer. The estate covers a total area of approximately 10 hectares, in which the landlady’s 16 horses can ride free and train in the game of polo.

The whole architectural complex covers an area of 500 square metres, while Kinga’s housing and residential part is spread over a space of 200 square metres.

The shape given to the building – whose renovation took about a year and a half – calls to mind a barn; however, its structural character is identified by the contemporary materials used.

The roof made of COR-TEN steel blends seamlessly and gently with the facade, while a glass element acts as a link between the living room and the stables, giving an atmosphere of great lightness.

The interiors boast an industrial attitude that blends with wooden elements, alternating metal beams and concrete walls, and finding visual balance in the naturalness of wood. The 19th-century trolley used as a table is very nice;

its original purpose was to transport metals to the Norblin factory in Warsaw, one of the largest metallurgical industries in the Kingdom of Poland in the 19th century.

The landlady pointed out that the beams used in the kitchen on the fronts of the tables and furniture come from the same industrial complex and, therefore, have the same historical origin.

In the large glass open space, an armchair with a leather- covered footrest made by British designer Timothy Oulton stands out: this is the Saddle Chair model, a must-have of the well-known English brand.

Around the trolley/side table, four padded armchairs covered with a very delicate pink velvet give a touch of glamour to the airy environment.

Large photos of Neil Egerton stand out on the walls and in the other rooms, to create a sort of very private gallery devoted to the noble art of polo.

Another material selected by the landlady is copper, used as a distinguishing element to warm up the industrial atmosphere:

a romantic freestanding bathtub with old-fashioned lines displays this material, as does the sink in the kitchen. Throughout Kinga’s abode, we also find decorative elements and souvenirs that refer to horses, such as the poetic bust made with stranded sticks, collected and brought from Belgium!

The passion for polo, as she told us, began 15 years ago by chance, when she moved to a club near Warsaw. Now, she can’t do without it: she can’t imagine a weekend without a polo match, as well as her favourite dogs and horses.
