A HOUSE FOR DREAMING

18/05/2023

Elegance and style overlook the sea and use its energy to make the rooms welcoming and full of charm.

This project was born from the meeting of two moments, both essential for the final result. Architect Roberto Grossi signed this renovation and told us about it.

“In this particular work, there were two figures who had a major impact on the design choices. On the one hand, the previous owner, gifted with great sensitivity and passion for beauty, harmony, and shapes.

On the other, the new owner and our customer, a company man born and raised on the sea of the Cinque Terre, who has drawn all his passions from his place of origin: a deep-sea freediving fisher since he was a young boy, a skilled sailing navigator in a more mature age, and a passionate winemaker.

Two extremely different people, but both endowed with great personalities.

The former owner gave us a property on the top floor of a hillside villa from the early 1900s, completely renovated in the 1980s, spread over two levels.

Those who had preceded us, with that design, had already given the building interesting and well-studied volumes and spaces.

A house with 360-degree views that range from the open sea and the Gulf of Poets dotted with small villages and marinas to the urban panorama of the port city and the forest out back.

Once highlighted these elements, our project has used them as a starting point, aiming at their conservation and glorification.

Those who preceded us had done a good job that had to be preserved, and improved where possible, adapting it to the current times and the way of being of the new owner.

The history – albeit recent – of this version of the building, of its former user and its current owner, had to come together in a single solution, where the two souls could coexist.

By operating in this way, we worked with light, materials, colour, and images, in order to recreate an indoor space of discreet elegance that alternates lightness and warmth, creating a particular environment that talks about its residents.

The play between the uneven steps and the volumes of the living room becomes the “invisible” heart of the lighting design of the living area, which – with low intensity so as not to steal the show from the outdoor landscape, even in the evening hours, and with the play of chiaroscuro – creates a contemporary, soft and welcoming environment, made of essential lines.

The staircase leading upstairs was transformed according to the same principle. Backlit glass steps, almost floating on the white steel structure, become a light sculpture that acts as a filter between the dining area with a large table and the living room with spacious sofas.

Along the wall that runs through the entire living area – over five metres long –, the wallpaper – hand-painted by Elena Carozzi – talks about the great passion for the sea and the strong personality of the owner”, concludes the architect.
