Pur avendo girato i Caraibi in lungo e in largo, quando penso a Barbados mi si apre il cuore. L’isola, che è una sola e -a differenza delle credenze popolari- non costituisce alcun arcipelago, ma è un concentrato di paesaggi diversi, di cultura e di storia; una meta eccezionale se si vuole comprendere il colonialismo attraverso un viaggio bellissimo, tra un piatto di pesce volante e un bicchiere di ottimo rhum sorseggiato davanti al mare.
Barbados è lunga solo 33 km e larga 22 ed è collocata in una posizione privilegiata tra il Mar dei Caraibi e l’Oceano Indiano; correnti favorevoli consentono un clima mite durante tutto l’anno, senza i fenomeni atmosferici devastanti che toccano altre isole.
Questo ha permesso al turismo di diventare una fonte importante di crescita per l’isola che, pur mantenendo forti tratti selvaggi, ospita strutture alberghiere molto belle. Ne sono un esempio il Sandals Barbados Resort e il The Colony.
Il primo è realizzato nella parte sud, a ridosso della meravigliosa spiaggia di Saint Lawrence Gap; è senza dubbio un esempio di accoglienza di lusso, con camere arredate in modo elegante, sistemi altamente tecnologici e un’accoglienza da 5 stelle: camere con vista sull’oceano, servizio di maggiordomo e la piscina zero-entry più grande dell’isola. Di sicuro se sceglierete di alloggiare qui, avrete la fortuna di mangiare divinamente all’interno degli 11 ristoranti immersi nel rigoglioso verde della proprietà.
Piatti locali, ma anche internazionali fra cui l’indiano, l’italiano e il teppanyaki, tipica cucina giapponese alla piastra.
L’altro Resort, The Colony Club, si colloca invece sulla famosa Platinum West Coast affacciandosi sul Mar dei Caraibi. È anche questa una soluzione di lusso, ma prevede strutture che non superino i due piani, molti sport, un servizio personalizzato ed un occhio puntato su salute e benessere, con lezioni di cucina “Bajan” e verdura prelevata direttamente dall’orto.
In generale l’isola consente numerose attività ed eventi (per consultare il calendario: www.visitbarbados. org/it/) fra cui il trekking, la degustazione del rhum e i percorsi attraverso i luoghi storici della tratta degli schiavi.
Un appuntamento da non perdere è la visita alle Harrison’s Cave, emozionanti grotte con stalattiti da visitare a bordo di un trenino in compagnia di uno speleologo. Barbados è un’isola davvero emozionante, una meta gioiosa e divertente; per questo oltre il 50% di quelli che la visitano ci ritorna.

Barbados: beyond the borders of dreams
A real Heaven on Earth marked by unspoiled nature and captivating atmospheres

Despite having travelled through the Caribbean far and wide, when I think about Barbados, my heart opens up.
The island – there’s only one as opposed to popular beliefs – does not make up any archipelago but is a pile of different landscapes, of culture and history; an extraordinary destination if you wish to understand the colonialism by means of a beautiful journey, between a plate of flying fish and a glass of excellent rum sipped in front of the sea.
Barbados is just 33 km in length and 22 km in width, placed in a special position between the Caribbean Sea and the Indian Ocean; favorable currents allow a mild climate all year long, avoiding the devastating weather phenomena that touch other islands.
This allowed tourism to become a strong development source for the island that – while maintaining its strong wild features – hosts very beautiful accommodations. Examples of this are the Sandals Barbados Resort and The Colony.
The first one has been fulfilled in the Southside, close to the wonderful Saint Lawrence Gap beach; it’s undoubtedly an example of luxury hospitality with bedrooms with fine furniture, hightech systems and a 5-star welcome: rooms overlooking the ocean, butler service and the biggest zero-entry pool of the island.
For sure if you choose to stay here, you’ll have the chance to divinely eat inside the 11 restaurants that lie deep in the blooming greenery of the estate. Local dishes but also international ones, including Italian, Indian and Teppanyaki – a typical style of Japanese cuisine that uses an iron griddle – cooking.
The other resort – The Colony Club – is placed on the famous Platinum West Coast, overlooking the Caribbean Sea. This is a luxury solution too but it plans structures not higher than two floors, several sports, a customized service and eyes on health and well-being with “Bajan” cooking lessons and vegetables collected directly from the garden.
The island generally allows several activities and events (visit www.visitbarbados.org/ to check the schedule) including trekking, rum tasting and itineraries through the slave trade landmarks. A must-have is the Harrison’s Cave tour: thrilling caverns with stalactites that you can visit on board a small train joined by a speleologist. Barbados is truly an exciting island, a joyful and funny destination; that’s the reason why more than 50% of tourists will come back.
