Charm and modernity

Renovation works bring back to light the marvels of an 18th-century building in the heart of Catania.

There are houses that cannot disregard their own history, but rather are able — thanks to wise renovation and re-furbishment works — to coexist with it and reinvent themselves in a contemporary way, without losing their essen-ce. Cristina’s flat is a perfect combination of charm and modernity, a large space with a trend for comfort, where the attention to detail perfectly lives side by side with a minimal mark.

The building — placed in the picturesque and very central neighborhood of the ancient market of Catania, just a few steps from the spectacular Duomo square — was built in the 18th century during the big rebuilding period af-ter the “1693 Sicily earthquake”.

After many years of opulence and splendour, during the last century, it had fallen in a condition of decay and dissolution of spaces, like several noble buildings placed in the heart of the city. Renovation works have been conceived by the owner herself; they started from the essence of the building to later carry on in the spirit of subtraction, like trying to resurrect the original mark by means of a patient removal of all those “hasty” modifications carried out over the years.

In this way, floorings, partition walls, false ceilings and paint layers left room for exquisite wood, polished fra-meworks and for the finishing touches of precious floorings, finally giving back to the house the authenticity of its layout and the balance between all materials.

Cristina stated that “the renovation of the house has been carried out by completely supporting my standard of living, following at full my idea of incomplete and unfinished things, implementing the renovation of original ele-ments such as doors, decorated frameworks, vaults and floorings with a preservative purpose, without refurbishing neither what was missing nor extremely polished or sought-after decorations”.

The new partition of rooms has been designed in order to accommodate and guest people, at the same time by pledging a large private space both for residents and guests. In the middle of the flat, there is a wide common area dedicated to conviviality where the neutral shades of walls and floor are interrupted here and there by unexpected hints of colour belonging to original coverings and to a few and simple pieces of furniture and accessories, mostly coming from antiques markets, if not from local second-hand dealers.

The actual highlight of the flat is its splendid terrace overlooking the façade of the building. As a matter of fact, Cri-stina loves living her house and this is further confirmed by having a look at her terrace: she cares personally about it, a relaxing hobby that connects her with nature.
