Tra le linee pure ed essenziali dei vasi, si scorge un design metropolitano che guarda verso Oriente.

Living in the Big Apple. E una grossa mela rossa era proprio il compenso che ricevevano i musicisti jazz degli anni ’30 suonando nei locali di Harlem e Manhattan. Iniziarono così a soprannominare New York come la “Grande Mela”, capitale di successo della musica jazz nel mondo e non solo. A Garment District, battezzato anche “distretto della moda”, in una fashion area di Manhattan, l’interior designer Charoonkit Thahong, apre le porte di questo artistico loft.

Originario della Thailandia, ma newyorkese di adozione, ha saputo conferire a questo eclettico spazio abitativo un taglio contemporaneo con sfumature che ci riconducono nel Sud-Est asiatico, in una porzione di mondo teatro di forti contrasti: la ricchezza dell’eredità storica ed il suo vivace sviluppo industriale. Gaudente e misteriosa… la Thailandia è soprattutto la terra del sorriso, ed è proprio la naturale reazione che si manifesta vivendo questo appartamento.

La casa è caratterizzato da un perimetro quasi interamente costituito da finestre che si affacciano sulla città: rumore, colori e dinamismo della metropoli si possono solo percepire, perché qui regna la gioia e la quiete. La casa è sia il soggetto che il contenitore degli interessi del proprietario, e i suoi interni riflettono – come uno secchio – la sua personalità. L’interior designer Charoonkit Thahong è infatti un collezionista “eterogeneo”: serie di vetri monocromatici e coloratissimi sparsi per la casa, installazioni di piante tropicali, lampade e oggetti vintage che si accumulano sugli scaffali, sedie e sgabelli di varie origini e stili.

Un disordine organizzato, che rappresenta l’anima di questo loft contraddistinto da una moltitudine di vasi in vetro soffiato e lavorati a mano, vere opere d’arte che alternano superfici trasparenti, opaline e finissime texture, oggetti unici ed irripetibili. La struttura è stata lasciata quasi interamente come era originariamente, con i grandi spazi a tutta altezza e le tubature dell’acqua e del riscaldamento visibili, rispettando l’iconografia dei vecchi loft industriali. Sono gli oggetti a definirne il carattere: con ogni acquisto significativo, la casa cambia decisamente espressione, suscitando sempre un lieto sorriso.

Living in the Big Apple. A big red apple was the fair compensation that jazz performers got during the ‘30s, after playing in the clubs in Harlem and Manhattan. That’s the way NY started being nick-named as the “Giant Apple”, gaining ground as the capital of jazz music and not only that. In Garment District, inside one of the fashion areas of Manhattan, designer Charoonkit Thahong opens the gates of this artistic loft.

Originally from Thailand but an adopted New Yorker, he has been able to give to this eclectic living space a contemporary style with shades leading back to the Southeast Asian region, in a part of the world which is the scene of strong contrasts: the wealth of the historical legacy and its lively industrial development. Delightful and mysterious, Thailand is above all the land of smiles and that’s exactly the natural reaction that it arises while living this flat.

The house is distinguished by a perimeter – almost entirely consisting of windows – which overlooks the city: the noise, the colours and the dynamism of the metropolis can be barely perceptible; happiness and stillness rule here. The house is both the main character and the “box” of the owner’s interests; its interior design showed – as a bucket – his personality. Indeed, designer Charoonkit Thahong is a “miscellaneous” collector, as can be seen thanks to the series of monochromatic and colorful glasses scattered all over the house; tropical plant installations, lamps and vintage items that pile up on shelves and chairs and stools of several origins and styles.

An organized mess that represents the soul of this loft, distinguished by a whole host of handcrafted vases in blown glass, true works of art that switch between see-through surfaces, opalines and the finest textures; unique and once-off items. The building has been almost entirely left as it originally was, with wide and full-height spaces, water and heating pipes are clearly visible, along these lines respecting the iconography of the old industrial lofts. Objects define the attitude of the loft: with every significant purchase, no doubt that the house changes its face, continuously giving rise to a delighted smile.
